Budget friendly enrichment ideas for your dog

The Busy Box
Did you know your dog’s wolf ancestors spent most of their waking hours hunting, foraging, and solving problems just to find food? Today your pup likely gets a bowl of kibble twice a day without lifting a paw. Comfortable? Definitely. But their sharp little brain still needs exercise.
The best part: you don’t need to break the bank to keep them mentally stimulated. Over the next few weeks I’ll share DIY enrichment ideas made from things you probably already have at home—easy to make, budget-friendly, and genuinely beneficial for your dog.
Heads up: All of these activities should be supervised. Never leave your dog alone while they’re playing with any puzzle or enrichment toy.
5. The Busy Box
This is the ultimate enrichment activity, and it is basically a treasure hunt in a box. Stuff a cardboard box with towels, paper, and toys, hide treats throughout, and let your dog dig in. Great for boredom, anxiety, and destructive tendencies.
What you need:
• A cardboard box you don’t mind getting destroyed (shoe boxes work best)
• Old towels, toys, or packing paper
• Treats
1. Find a box you don’t mind getting ripped apart.
2. Fill it with towels, old toys, and packing paper.
3. Hide treats throughout.
4. Close the lid for an extra challenge and let your dog go wild.
Pro tip: If your box has packing tape or shipping labels, remove them first. Once your dog is done, don’t clean up right away. Let them sniff around until they are completely sure every treat is gone. That sniffing time is enrichment too.
