Budget friendly enrichment ideas for your dog

Here’s something I find fascinating: your dog’s wolf ancestors spent most of their waking hour’s hunting, foraging, and solving problems just to eat. Fast forward to today, and your pup gets a bowl of kibble delivered twice a day without lifting a paw. Comfortable? Absolutely. But that clever brain of theirs still needs a workout.
The good news? You don’t need to spend a fortune to keep your dog mentally stimulated. Over the next few weeks, I will be posting Do-It-Yourself enrichment ideas made from stuff you probably already have at home. Easy to make, easy on your wallet, and genuinely good for your dog.
Heads up: All of these activities should be supervised. Never leave your dog alone while they’re playing with any puzzle or enrichment toy.
Toilet Paper Roll Puzzle
Free, sustainable, and takes about 30 seconds to make. This one is a favourite because it taps right into your dog’s natural foraging instinct and they get to rip it apart at the end, which is half the fun.
What you need:
• A toilet paper roll (cleaned out)
• Your dog’s favourite treats or dry food
1. Fold one end of the roll closed.
2. Drop a few treats inside.
3. Fold the other end closed.
4. Hand it over and watch the magic happen.
Pro tip: If your dog looks confused at first, cut a small treat-sized hole in the middle so treats fall out as they play. That’s exactly how I introduced it to my dog. Let them rip the roll apart too as that’s part of what they enjoy!
