Budget friendly enrichment ideas for your dog

Muffin Pan and Ball Puzzle

Here’s something fascinating to think about: your dog’s wolf ancestors spent most of their waking hour’s hunting, foraging, and problem-solving just to find their next meal. Fast forward to today, and our dogs are served bowls of kibble twice a day without lifting a paw. Comfortable? Absolutely. But their clever minds still crave challenges and stimulation.

The good news is that keeping your dog mentally enriched doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing simple DIY enrichment ideas made from everyday household items you probably already have at home. They’re easy to create, budget-friendly, and a great way to keep your dog happy, engaged, and mentally active.

Heads up: All of these activities should be supervised. Never leave your dog alone while they’re playing with any puzzle or enrichment toy.

2. Muffin Pan and Ball Puzzle

A classic for good reason. Simple to set up, mentally tiring for your dog, and it genuinely lowers stress by giving them a job to do. If you don’t have a muffin pan lying around, your local dollar store usually has one for about $5.

What you need:

•      A muffin pan

•      Balls that fit in the wells (tennis balls, Kong balls, whatever you have)

•      Treats or dry food

1.    Place 3 to 5 pieces of kibble or a treat in each well of the muffin pan.

2.    Cover each well with a ball.

3.    Set it on the floor and let your dog figure it out.

Pro tip: Shallow wells make it easier, deeper wells make it harder. My dog breezes through the shallow ones so I’m already eyeing a pan with deeper wells.
