Budget friendly enrichment ideas for your dog

The Towel Burrito

It’s amazing to think about how your dog’s wolf ancestors spent much of their day hunting, foraging, and figuring out how to find food. Today, most dogs enjoy the convenience of meals served right to them twice a day without any effort. While that’s certainly a comfortable lifestyle, their intelligent minds still crave challenges and opportunities to problem-solve.

The good news is that keeping your dog mentally engaged doesn’t have to be expensive. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing simple DIY enrichment ideas made from everyday household items you likely already have on hand. They’re easy to put together, budget-friendly, and a great way to support your dog’s mental well-being.

For your dog’s safety, all enrichment activities should be supervised.

Be sure to stay nearby and never leave your dog alone with puzzle toys or enrichment items.

3. The Towel Burrito

Yes, I call it the Towel Burrito. Take an old towel, hide some treats inside, roll it up, and let your dog unravel it. It encourages foraging, eases boredom and anxiety, and costs nothing.

What you need:

•         An old towel (preferably without holes or fraying)

•         Treats or dry food

1.      Lay the towel flat on the floor.

2.      Scatter treats along the towel.

3.      Roll it up like a burrito.

4.      Let your dog go to work.

Arya is ready for The Towel Burrito!

Pro tip: Start with a simple fold before rolling it tight. My dog had no idea what to do the first time I went straight to the full roll. Build up gradually and you can even tie it for the more advanced foragers.
